Are You Just Another Star Or The Moon?
We're all of us clamouring to become something, but there's a big difference between being successful and fulfilling our purpose, it's the difference between being another star and the moon. Thousands dream, hundreds reach their goals, but only tens reach their full potential and die empty. Even more tragic is we surround ourselves with people, events and commitments that shine bright like diamonds in our skies, that are stars and not the moon, but a star is never supposed to be the centerpiece of anyone's life. So pick up your telescope and look up into the universe that is you, as we try to discover, if you're trying to become a star, or the moon.
STARS Are Everywhere!
Two years ago I was beginning to have strong affections towards a certain girl. She was colourful, like a rainbow to the dark cloud that I was those days and I thought the feeling of opposites attract was mutual. Unfortunately she intended to be safe, not ready for the upheavals and risks that come with an exclusive relationship and so like all great writers do when faced with emotional turmoil, I wrote a poem.
THE MOON
If I cannot be the moon then I will be nothing,
If I cannot be the truth then I will be unspoken,
For I’d rather have solitude in darkness than brotherhood in light,
I’d rather die in your recess than perish in your sight.
If I cannot be the moon then I will be nothing,
Not another stick in a broom or strand in cotton,
For I’ve longed for a black fleece and mismatched eyes
I’d let you have me, in anyway but ice.
If I cannot be the moon then I will be nothing
Nothing but a million rusted chains interlocking,
And holding fast to my significance passed,
So that I remain the first, even after the last.
If I cannot be the moon then I will be nothing,
Not another star in your colorful sky,
If I cannot be the moon then I will be nothing,
Nothing to you but a strangers sigh.
(*Shudders* Such melodrama.) Melancholia aside younger me was onto something here. Too often we settle for being just another star in the sky and yet we claim to be unique (just look at our DNA!). The truth is we're all a puzzle piece in this great big life and if we are all shaped like stars we aren't going to get this pretty picture done in time. It's okay to look up to people, it's another thing to want to become them or like them. You also shouldn't have friends that are stars (mind you I say friends-people with deep emotional connections, not acquaintances). Stars are everywhere (the guy you say Hi to every day on your way to work, your room mates who are cool as roommates but not buddies) we tend to think that the moment we spend ample enough time with someone and share enough laughs, that they're friends. But we're wrong, friends aren't stars, friends are moons and
MOONS ADD VALUEVALUE
A stars job (as far as I know) is to hang up in the sky and look pretty. A star is a prop, decoration, accessory and investing unnecessary time in a star or becoming one is quite futile. Moons on the other hand have a lot to do with tidal waves (Now I'm no scientist, but from what I gathered the moons the reason why the ocean is never stagnant. More so, the moon lights up the night, have you ever seen a night with just stars, it's bleak and dark. A moon is what the Bible refers to in Genesis 1 vs 16, it speaks of God making two great lights, one to rule the day, and one to rule the night, we are supposed to be that second light, a lesser light but a great light, powered by the Son himself, not a miserly star.) Stars exist to be admired from afar, a moon adds value to your life. So the people you hang with, the events you go to, the commitments you make, are they just props, decorations, there for your entertainment solely? Then my friend you need to stop star gazing. Be more, be a moon, and don't waste time trying to become a star or chasing after one. I'm Wayne Samuel, and if I'm not a moon now, best believe I have every intention of only having friends that are moons and becoming one myself, what about you superstar?
