Why I Will Never Be Christian

Image
What if I told you the word Christian was not a revelation ?  It wasn't . Your mantra, your go-to label, your safe little box that you tick on forms was no revelation of the disciples of Christ, it was in fact most likely coined by the unregenerated, carnal minds of the world. So what's the harm, it means Christ-like doesn't it?  Yes, the same way that I could tell my crush that her beauty is like a dove (singular similarity)  or my nemesis that he moves about like a roaring lion looking for whom to devour. In both these instances I am stating matter of factly that the one is not the other. My crush who is like a dove does not have wings, she cannot fly, doesn't have the brain of a bird and is not a specie of birds. My adversary is merely making pretenses, like a child after watching Lion King. But scripture reveals to us that it is closer to the truth to say that you are Christ than it is to say that you are Christlike. In Daniel, after Nebuchadnezzar thre...

A BUHARI LEASE ON LIFE

Image
Have you ever tried to change? It’s a messy business, whether it’s changing a thousand naira note, or an impression, or a country. The promise of change is in itself rhetoric (powerful and persuasive speech). Just think about it, telling a close friend you’re going to change your great and flaring temper, or a parent that you’re going to change your disrespectful demeanor. You cannot promise change without an elevated language. No husband says “Okay darling, I’ve been cheating on you, but now I’m going to change.” No matter how genuine the intentions behind the statement, no emotionally bruised wife is going to believe it. But with the same intentions say “I realize that I haven’t been the man I ought to be, the man that you deserve. But I have found that I can’t live without you, and cannot live with you whilst subjecting you to such great pain. I love you, and I’ve decided to change.” Just like that the marriage is back on track, because for the language of change to work, it...

LOVE AND ALL THINGS FAIRYTALE : SCARS#1

Image
SCAR:  Noun -  A permanent mark on the skin sometimes caused by the healing of a wound (English Dictionary- Offline). Figuratively- A permanent transformation caused by a hurt. Scars could be a result of a personal mistake or someone else's oversight. Sometimes, memories linger because they (scars) leave you with stories to tell. On my left hand is a little scar from an accident I had about a month ago as a result of someone else's mistake. I was in a "Keke" (Tricycle), lost in thoughts of somethings I had to sort out. Suddenly I was jolted back to reality by an abrupt turn made by the "Keke" driver. What I saw was a car almost hitting the tricycle from my side and the tricycle turning over while in motion as I heard the crushing sound of glass and iron. Thank God we all got out of the tricycle alive. However, the driver had a serious scratch on his left arm and was bleeding heavily. The lady who sat beside me had some se...

Popcorn Soda and The Cinema of The Mind

Image
We all have movies playing in our minds. Whether it be the Heartbreak Romance starring our Exes and featuring a Westlife soundtrack, or the Science Fiction of how we were genetically modified to look like our parents when we are in fact the offspring of some wealthy billionaires somewhere. A film is being produced constantly. Sometimes they are short films based on worry. With minimum budget and very poor storytelling we deliver to the silver screen of our soul a tale of how everything that can go wrong, will. But this capacity to imagine and meditate was not given to us for ill, now that we no longer have the Spirit of fear but of power love and sound mind, we ought to flip the script. So lights, camera, action, let’s go! All of the best directors (Nolan, Snyder, and Spielberg) are great because they have a vision. They don’t just throw a concoction together and expect a blockbuster to happen.  They know where they are going, do you? Jesus did. Knowing who He was, know...

Subway Surf And Eternal Life

Image
For a moment there we were all running wild and free and forever, until we tripped or fell and some monster reared its ugly head and swallowed us up. That was Temple Run, an Android game whose popularity at the time seemed to know no end, and whose gaming potential did know no end. But then came along Subway Surf, more urban and relatable, a little kid being a little kid running away from some guy in a uniform at the subway, awesome. What does this have to do with anything? Well I was awaiting a vehicle the morning after the climax of the phenomenal Jam Summit 2017 at Balm of Gilead, trying to pass time playing a cracked and cheat empowered Subway Surf when it hit me, this is precisely what eternal life is like. The cheat made it so that I had unlimited lives in the game. I could get caught a thousand times, and save myself a thousand times because I had an unlimited supply of “keys”. In a similar way Jesus gave us a cheat in life when He gave us life and life more abundantl...

Why You Can't Learn From Your Mistakes

Image
Hocus pocus. The idea that you can learn from your mistakes is like being a pro at Marco Polo (a game where one person closes his eyes whilst another gets as far away as possible, then the blind person shouts “marco!” and the other shouts “polo!”, and the blind person is to find the other using sound alone). Problem is this hide and seek game is played in the swimming pool. Same game, same water but I bet the variables will change in the sea in the midst of a storm, or in a lake in the midst of swans, or in a river in the midst of rocks. I don’t know, maybe you’re like me, maybe you haven’t lived long enough for life to repeat old questions, and as long as that is the case, you’re going to need a whole lot more than just learning from your mistakes. Life is exactly like the math teacher who gives the simple questions out as examples whilst the more complex ones come out in the test. You find yourself unprepared for the X’s and Y’s, the variables that turn your examples ups...
