LESSONS TO LEARN FROM THE RIO OLYMPICS

Image
Watching the Rio 2016 Olympics you can't help but attest to the fact that something important is going on. You sit through the javelin and discus throwing, and all other obscure sports because somehow, everything is now of import. The world is coming together to breed unity out of competition and even if your nation isn't there, you're sitting watching to see whose flag will be raised high above the others, because everyone loves winning, even if you're just a witness to it. We love watching it happen, but just because we're not fit and firm athletes doesn't mean we don't have our sports-we write, we sing, we dance, we do math and ultimately we are trying to win, to beat our fears and outrun our dreams. So what can these more physical  sportpersons teach us about victory? A lot, and some of them, you've probably heard before. Never Underestimate The Power of Support Thiago Da Silva. A young, vibrant Brazilian with that hopeful look in his eyes...

Are You Just Another Star Or The Moon?

Image
We're all of us clamouring to become something, but there's a big difference between being successful and fulfilling our purpose, it's the difference between being another star and the moon. Thousands dream, hundreds reach their goals, but only tens reach their full potential and die empty. Even more tragic is we surround ourselves with people, events and commitments that shine bright like diamonds in our skies, that are stars and not the moon, but a star is never supposed to be the centerpiece of anyone's life. So pick up your telescope and look up into the universe that is you, as we try to discover, if you're trying to become a star, or the moon. STARS Are Everywhere! Two years ago I was beginning to have strong affections towards a certain girl. She was colourful, like a rainbow to the dark cloud that I was those days and I thought the feeling of opposites attract was mutual. Unfortunately she intended to be safe, not ready for the upheavals and risks th...

Life Lessons Travelling To Warri

Image
A dream is the only thing that would move a man out of the reality he's familiar with-his comfort zone- and propel him to chart a new course. However, if you know anything about a dream you know you can only catch glimpses of it at a time, and yes everyone wants to be an overnight success but to realise your dream it's gonna probably require more nights than one. A dream is like a three course meal, there's the appetizer (investment), the main course (success) and then dessert (legacy). The first of the three propelled me to Warri where I met some wonderful people, and learnt a lot of lessons on the road. So pack your stuff, let's go. 1) The World Helps What It Needs The rain was coming down heavy and I was stranded on a pavement, trying not to sacrifice my shoes to the puddles of rain around me. Then I heard a man scream "Warri"  and I screamed "yes" in return. He huddled over to me, offering an umbrella and a ride on his back to the bus...

A GAME OF THRONES

Image
As the EDO 2016 Governorship elections draw nigh and both parties make a point of prostituting mediocrity to Dumb and Dumber proportions (what is Greatest Gbo Gb, Greatest Gba Gba if not the language of backwardness?) I can't help-despite myself-but to be in reverential awe of the importance of politics, in every sphere of our lives, even our destinies. It occurs to me that this great big life is not so unlike the HBO series Game Of Thrones. It's full of twists, turns and good people getting bad karma , even Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 14 "Here's something that happens all the time and makes no sense at all: Good people get what's coming to the wicked, and bad people get what's coming to the good." Is that what happened to Ned Stark or what? Everyone is also more or less politically motivated in their perception of wrong and right, and nothing captures this better than Jamie Lannisters confession that the people he's killed and the other horrible...

Prayer Warriors vs PRAYerrrrr Warriorrrs!!

Image
There's only one fleeting instance in which I subscribe to Boko Haramic methods, that is when, after a long day at work (IT), I lay my head to rest on my vaguely uncomfortable bed and begin a vaguely uncomfortable pilgrimage into the dream world, only to be awoken by "Alabado shok raba ba ba ba ba gbosh tolo carta GBA DOSH!"-a prayerrr warriorrr. This time it's my neighbour next door, screaming at the top of his lungs through laser thin walls that wouldn't even stifle a whisper talk less of a war cry. He goes on and on like this for no less than 30minutes, divulging to God and the rest of the now disturbed world about the evil serpents after his family, the spirit of poverty troubling him and the cat outside that moonlights as a witch (I may be getting hyperbolic here, but you get the point).  I'm bringing this up, because I'm a believer and I find this grossly irritating, so how would an unbeliever feel? (And the Prayerrrr warriorrr says I don'...

SCANDALS

Image
So no matter how much of a saint you are, it's very likely you're a thin strip of ice away from some cold, inundating scandal. And why? Because that year, when you were in sin, chucking up the deuces to the good old Lord, skeletons were in fashion. Skeletons were in your closet and even now that old things are passed away, skeletons are still in fashion, they're still in our closets, only smaller, less fleshy ones, but they're even worse now, all bloodied, dripping red over your pure white goody two shoes, leaving scarlet imprints on your flowing gown of sainthood, and you know it's only a matter of time before everybody finds out, because there is nothing as conspicuous as a hypocrite. Scandal is a show on the ABC channel featuring Kerry Washington and based partially on   former George H.W. Bush administration press aide Judy Smith (I've been reading wikipedia) which my mother loves to watch, that year at least. I wasn't too intrigued by it, but ...

In Case Of A Fire

Image
You've been here before, lost in a red, dancing shadow that's warm on your face like a million pecks at once. Pecks, if the kiss gets any deeper than that, you know you'll get Burnt by fire. We all have fires in our lives, not the kind of fire you build, the kind that breaks out all at once, a fire that consumes you,  threatening to steal all your peace, kill all your oxygen, destroy all that you own. And it always starts out small, a white lie; a compromise that isn't hurting anyone, an "it's really not that bad" that terraforms into a life-threathening cancer. Fire!! It's a pretty word, and somewhere in our souls, sometime in our actions we are lighting it up, chalantly, non chalantly, doesn't matter, with all the flammable material that is in you it's only a matter of time before you have to deal with it, because sweep a flame under the rug all you want, one day, that rug itself will catch fire. So what do you do incase of a fire? Ste...
