Propagandas 'Crooked' Album Review

Image
On the Christian Hip Hop scene there exists three lanes to drive on occupied by three distinct leaders. The first is the immediately obvious God-music (rap equivalent of worship) artistes led by Da' T. R. U. T. H with Eshon Burgundy up and coming, the other extreme is NF (the whiny, venting, entirely sensual but safe rapper) and the middle lane occupied by Lecrae who vacillates between introspection, social consciousness and exegesis of the word of God. But in steps Propaganda with his new offering 'Crooked', in a self-made lane all by himself. This album makes you uncomfortable because you don't know where to put it. You find lines like 'Go to schools named after the Klan master' and ' Man can show pride but only God can give purpose' on the same song- "Crooked Ways" and you realize, oh yeah, this is crooked. Best line n this track? -'The strength of your whole team is crumpled with one meme', that's the kind of punchline th...

BACKSLIDERS: How Xtians Do The Moonwalk

Image
Now almost everyone’s a smooth criminal. It may not be immediately obvious, but somewhere between that Israeli genuineness is a Jacob scheming on how to get you to trade your birthright for some porridge. We constantly let sin rock our world, despite Christ asking sin to beat it on the cross of Calvary. We are all of us Billy’s looking for Jeans to be our lovers, but when the fruits of such amoral affairs come to light, we lament that the kid is not our son. And round and round we go because its human nature, the way the flesh makes us feel, turning us on, knocking us off our feet rocking our world and having us talking to the man in the mirror asking him to change his ways because we’re so darn guilty, but we’ll deal with all of that on another day. What we’re going to be talking about today is why Paul in his letters addresses the members of the churches his writing to as saints, only to later put them on blast for being Israeli and yet committing some Jacob styled sins. Why ar...

Hillsong United 'Wonder' Track by Track Review

Image
Hillsong United seems to have been around forever, but their new album Wonder is filled with all the invigoration and excitement of a first outing. The album released on the 9th of June 2017 (Yes this reviews a bit late, but better late than much later) makes you wonder why it was necessary to create the Hillsong variation Young and Free to cater to a younger audience, when Hillsong United still has the verve of teenagers (in a good way) . Wonder kicks-off with the title track 'Wonder', at first it sounds like you've heard this before, the atmospheric instrumental gives you the vibe of Zion, but the lyrics here cover some new territory for worship songs inviting you to see God's greatness in all the world. "I see the world in light I see the world in wonder I see the world in life Bursting in living colour I see the world Your way And I'm walking in the light" The following track Shadow Step continues the theme of finding God in the cos...

How Demons Are Made

Contrary to what most people believe, it seldom starts with ‘hello’. At a party in Austin’s apartment, soft music plays in the background, it’s not your usual 23 year old turn up. The light is dim but not too dim that you can’t see a few feet ahead of you. Some of the drinks are alcoholic but not too alcoholic that you can’t walk straight-no one’s going to be drinking that much anyway, because the guests are all more or less Christian. So are you, and so is she, and she smiles slightly when she notices you’re approaching her, she’s drinking a can of Malt, her guard isn’t entirely up because she’s comfortable. You strike up a conversation, and maybe it was a ‘hey’ or ‘how do you like the party’, you can’t remember, but you’re certain, it wasn’t ‘hello’. Months-a few choice texts, in the nick of time calls, and three splendid outings later- you two realize you enjoy each other’s company more than most others. You hold hands, are able to unlock old bitter memories and invite each ot...

Mayweather v. Pacquiao: A Battle Of Principles

Image
Sometime in the not too distant past, something happened that got those of us not in the least invested in boxing curious. There was to be a match of epic proportions between a Mayweather and a Pacquiao. In the weeks and days leading up to the event there were two general notions of the two. Mayweather dodges and plays a defensive game. Paquiao is stylistic, very well composed. If you saw the boxing match or just heard about it, then you knownit went a little like this. Ladies and gentlemen, it's the battle of gladiators! Standing in one corner, we have the reigning champion, this brother knows how to take a punch, weighing philosphical pounds and standing at six psychological feet tall it's -Self Control!! And in the other corner, it's a newbie whose actually been around for quite some time. Some call him a chicken the way he cops out on temptations . But this fella knows how to dodge, his is that Mayweather defensive game. Give it up for, Avoiding Temptation...

Why I Will Never Be Christian

Image
What if I told you the word Christian was not a revelation ?  It wasn't . Your mantra, your go-to label, your safe little box that you tick on forms was no revelation of the disciples of Christ, it was in fact most likely coined by the unregenerated, carnal minds of the world. So what's the harm, it means Christ-like doesn't it?  Yes, the same way that I could tell my crush that her beauty is like a dove (singular similarity)  or my nemesis that he moves about like a roaring lion looking for whom to devour. In both these instances I am stating matter of factly that the one is not the other. My crush who is like a dove does not have wings, she cannot fly, doesn't have the brain of a bird and is not a specie of birds. My adversary is merely making pretenses, like a child after watching Lion King. But scripture reveals to us that it is closer to the truth to say that you are Christ than it is to say that you are Christlike. In Daniel, after Nebuchadnezzar thre...

A BUHARI LEASE ON LIFE

Image
Have you ever tried to change? It’s a messy business, whether it’s changing a thousand naira note, or an impression, or a country. The promise of change is in itself rhetoric (powerful and persuasive speech). Just think about it, telling a close friend you’re going to change your great and flaring temper, or a parent that you’re going to change your disrespectful demeanor. You cannot promise change without an elevated language. No husband says “Okay darling, I’ve been cheating on you, but now I’m going to change.” No matter how genuine the intentions behind the statement, no emotionally bruised wife is going to believe it. But with the same intentions say “I realize that I haven’t been the man I ought to be, the man that you deserve. But I have found that I can’t live without you, and cannot live with you whilst subjecting you to such great pain. I love you, and I’ve decided to change.” Just like that the marriage is back on track, because for the language of change to work, it...
